Headaches maybe common, but that doesn’t mean headaches are normal!
Chances are, since you’re on this page you are familiar with the common symptoms of headaches: acute pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, or vomiting.
Migraines can be triggered by numerous factors such as stress, excessive light or sound, fatigue, hunger, diet, hormonal changes, weather changes, caffeine, cigarette smoke, head trauma, neck movements and even the use of a thin pillow .
It is however important to understand that these “triggering factors” do not cause headaches and migraines.
Dr. Seymour Diamond, Executive Director of the National Headache Foundation, has announced that new imaging techniques now allow researchers to identify what they think causes migraines: brain stem malfunction.
The malfunction of the brainstem (located near the top of the neck) increases the congestion of blood vessels around the brain, resulting in a consequent chain reaction that causes a migraine headache.
What’s the first thing you hear if you someone says they have a headache? Everyone wants to help, but the only way they know how is to offer some medication or painkiller. We have many people that can come in and say “oh yes I get headaches once a week, but it’s no big deal, I just take a Tylenol.” And yes, that does effectively make the headache disappear and you can go on with your day.
Eventually, 1 pill might not be enough, and you need a higher dosage for the same effect, or prescription medication. In time, the effectiveness of those declines too.
“Oh I don’t take medications, I just use natural products.” Great, those tend to be easier on your organs, and less addicting. But, in essence it’s not much different if you take natural herbs or remedies. At the end of the day, the effect is the same.
They mask the symptom. And, before you know it, your headaches become increasingly frequent, or more intense.
Whether you use something natural, pharmaceutical, or avoid foods that trigger the headache they are all external factors. Why not help your body truly heal? When your body works in equilibrium, you don’t have to spend so much time and money for years to come.
Why is your body creating this debilitating pain in your head?
Firstly, and most importantly, it is important to realize that if your body is creating some sort of symptom, whether it’s pain, vertigo, nausea, or fatigue, there’s a reason. Your body is telling you that something is wrong. Taking a painkiller is like turning off a fire alarm and not checking where the fire is!
“But doc, what does my neck have to do with my headache? I don’t have neck pain.”
Most of the muscles that are responsible for your head movements, start in the upper back or neck, and attach to your cranium.
When you have some sort of physical or emotional stress, tension is created in your body. That can include your cervical joints, muscles, and fascia that surrounds the nerves.
The nerves are the most important part to consider, as they are how your brain controls everything else. When nerves are compressed, even very slightly, the communication is diminished. As a result, you shift out of equilibrium: muscles can be overactive or under-active on one side; joints can be blocked, your thyroid can become under or over stimulated, etc. Your body can communicate that to your brain in various ways, for example: a throbbing, or intense pain in the back of the head, or one side around the eye, or a generalized headache.
When you cover those symptoms up with a painkiller, or don’t resolve the tension and nerve compression, the tension continues to accumulate and that’s how headaches or migraines become chronic or more frequent.
Chiropractic can help with headaches and migraines
Chiropractors are highly trained doctors specialized in the care of the spine and nervous system.
Chiropractors have been helping patients suffering from headaches and migraines for over a hundred years. The results of the specific correction of a cervical displacement are so phenomenal that the majority of patients showed elimination or significant improvement in both the severity and frequency of migraines and headaches. Recently, with the increase in emotional stress that children endure, plus the physical stress of tech-posture, there’s a been an increase in children suffering from headaches.
Chiropractic is effective for men, women, and children.
What is your limit? How intense or frequent do the headaches need to get for you to take action?
